Leadership Skills for Trainees - Three day event - FULL

This event is a non-residential three day course, when booking a place you must be able to attend all three days:
- Day One - Tuesday 22 September 2015
- Day Two - Wednesday 23 September 2015
- Day Three - Tuesday 20 October 2015
The days are 9.15am until 5pm
Aim of Course:
To develop the skills underpinning knowledge and self-awareness to be an effective clinical leader.
Overview:
This course is a pilot for the Severn Deanery and complements the Professional and Generic Skills day on Leadership and Management (Module 7). It will develop deeper and more extensive knowledge about leadership along with effective clinical team leadership skills. The Educational Development team of the Deanery is currently implementing a series of leadership development events and courses for Postgraduate Medical Training that build on and link with each other – the long term aim is to establish a ‘ladder’ of leadership courses that can potentially lead towards a postgraduate qualification in clinical leadership and management.
Programme Content:
The course content will be designed around the following topics:
- Leadership capabilities and styles
- Developing your Leadership style
- Flexible Leadership
- Developing Personal qualities
- Leading teams and working with others
- Creating high performance (including multi-disciplinary teams)
- Strategic Leadership
- Building strategic visions and plans
- Managing and leading team performance
- The leader as a motivator
Learning Outcomes:
By the end of the programme, delegates will be able to:
- Name the five levels of leadership
- Define the four stages of situation leadership
- State five characteristics of an influential person
- Explain the five areas for influencing others
- Give three reasons why we defer delegation
- Name the four stages of how a team forms
- Stage the eight team roles with explanations for each
- List five team building activities
- Describe the personality styles and explain each one
- Name seven parts of the conflict resolution model
- Understand what SMART stands for and give a working example
Day One - Leadership Capabilities
- Developing your leadership style(s)
- Flexible Leadership
- Developing personal qualities
There will be a project between days one and two.
Day Two - Leading teams and working with others
- Creating high performing teams (including multi-disciplinary teams)
There will be a project between day two and day three.
Day Three - Strategic Leadership
- Building strategic visions and plans
- Managing and leading team performance
- The leader as a motivator
Post course work: Delegates will highlight a task they have to work on. They are given a month to complete the task. They must then report back on how they undertook the task and results. This is linked directly to appraisal and revalidation and also asks for reflection.
